Johnston Industrial Supply was founded in 1962. The original building covered 9.000 square feet. The main product lines at that time were power transmission supplies including gears, sprockets, pulleys, belts and bearings. In the late 1960’s to early 1970’s we placed more emphasis into becoming a general line supplier.

In 1974, we made a commitment to specialize in cutting tools. With that commitment made, we phased out power transmission supplies. We then made an agreement with Union Butterfield to become a full line stocking distributor of high speed round tools. The initial order of $25,000 in metal cutting tools established Johnston Industrial as the largest stocking location in the valley.

At that time, we also made a commitment to American Saw to become a factory authorized welding center. What began as a small operation with just one welder has now become an ISO9001 certified center with six welders.

In 1978, we responded to the needs of our customers in the North Valley, and opened our Modesto store. In Modesto, we have continued the commitment to customer service that our company was founded on.

In 1980, we placed even greater emphasis into cutting tools, and began converting abrasive product for local consumers with a maximum width capacity of 12 inches. JISCO Abrasives was born.

In 1984-1985, recognizing the needs of the industry, manufacturing capacity of abrasive belts was increased to 36-inch widths. With the success of wider conversion capabilities, the range of standard available widths was expanded to include belts from 1/8-inch to 54-inches.

By 1990, we had outgrown our facility and expanded the building to 42,000 square feet.

In 1994, additional welding capacity was needed. We now have the capability to weld blades from 1/8 inch wide to 3-1/2 inches wide.

In 1996, a CNC punch press was added to the abrasive department for PSA discs increasing the range available from ½ inch to 40 inches. This addition also enabled us to increase production in keeping with our goal to ship within 24 hours.

In 2002, as our customer base grew in the south valley, a new location was added in Bakersfield to provide our customers with stock levels on products not readily available in the Kings/Kern county area.

Over the years, we have increased inventory to include U.S. Standard, Metric and special diameter round tools as well as an extensive inventory of indexable tooling. Our abrasive line has also grown to include a wide variety of standard and specialty products including aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia and ceramic products in belts, rolls, PSA and quick-change discs.
